Crosswind Calculator

Resolve wind speed into crosswind and headwind or tailwind components using the angle relative to your direction of travel.

How the crosswind calculator works

Crosswind component = wind speed × |sin(angle)|. Along-track component = wind speed × cos(angle); positive is a headwind and negative is a tailwind. Angle is measured between the wind direction and the direction of travel.

Frequently asked questions

How is crosswind component calculated?

Multiply wind speed by the absolute value of the sine of the angle between wind direction and the runway or travel direction.

Can I use this for flight decisions?

This is a mathematical estimate only. Pilots must use official weather reports, aircraft limitations, runway orientation and approved procedures.
