Dirt Calculator
Estimate soil volume from rectangular dimensions and optional extra allowance.
Formula and assumptions
Assumes a rectangular area and uniform depth; compaction and settling are not modeled.
Results depend on the inputs and assumptions shown. Check units and independently verify important decisions.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much dirt I need?
Multiply length by width by depth to get volume. Convert all dimensions to the same unit, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.
Should I add extra dirt for settling?
Often an allowance is useful because loose soil can compact or the ground may be uneven. Choose an allowance based on material and site conditions rather than assuming one percentage fits every job.
Does this estimate include weight or delivery?
A volume estimate does not determine weight or delivery cost. Those depend on soil type, moisture content, supplier pricing and truck capacity.
